Comparison and Contrast Essay

The  stories "The Fall of the House of Usher" and "A Rose for Emily" have a couple of similarities. This similarities are varied, the go from smilar themes to similarities in the authors life. But the one I am going to be referring to is going to be the similarities on the main characters that are represented in both stories. The similarities of the characters in both stories go from the mental state to acts that are commited by them.

First of all, in both stories you can see that the main characters of the story, both Emily and Roderick, suffer from mental problems. We can infer these by reading and analyzing some of the events and reactions that occur in the reading with both characters. An example of these is when Emily had the dead body of Homer on her house. Another example is how Roderick got sick and had everything that his sister had just by thinking about it.

Second of all, we can see the deep connection that they both had with their loved ones to he point that their need of them, of satisfying them lead them to their deaths. In "A Rose for Emily"  you can see how close Emily was to her father to the point that until the day she died she tried to live the way he wanted. In contrast, on "The Fall of the House of the Usher" you see the deep bond and connection that Roderick had with his sister to the point where it drove him mad and he commited a homicide and then this lead to his own death. Both of this characters had a really strong bond with their loved ones and throughout the story you can see how this affects the life of the main characters.

Lastly, you can see hoe both main characters are driven mad and commit a serious crime. In "The Fall of the House of Usher" Roderick is driven mad by his fear and because of it ends up killing his sister Madeline. Just like in the story mentioned before, on "A Rose for Emily" you see how the love Emily had for Homer and what he did lead her to kill him. In a way you see how both characters are driven by his feelings, either love or fear, to commit serious crimes and how their mental states don't let them see it like a bad thing.

To conclude, trhoughout both stories you can see the decay of both main characters. You see their lives and how it affected them both mentally and physically to the point that it let them to a state of decay and death. That is what both characters mainly represent: sadness, decay, mental problems, and death.
